BMI Calculator

What is a BMI Calculator?

A Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator is a tool used to estimate a person's body fat based on their weight and height. It provides an indication of whether an individual has a healthy body weight for a given height. BMI is widely used as a simple method to categorize individuals into different weight categories such as underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese.

How to Calculate BMI

The formula is BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared.

A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. BMI applies to most adults 18-65 years.

BMI Table for Adults

Here is the BMI classification for adults aged 20 and older:

BMI RangeWeight Status
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 - 24.9Normal weight
25.0 - 29.9Overweight
30.0 and aboveObese

BMI Table for Children and Teens, Age 2-20

For children and teens, BMI is interpreted differently than it is for adults. BMI is age- and sex-specific and is often referred to as BMI-for-age. The BMI percentiles are used to classify weight status:

BMI PercentileWeight Status
Less than the 5th percentileUnderweight
5th to less than the 85th percentileNormal weight
85th to less than the 95th percentileOverweight
95th percentile and aboveObese

BMI Chart for Children and Teens

BMI-for-age percentiles are plotted on standardized growth charts that are specific to age and sex. These charts are available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Below is a simplified version of what these charts generally represent:
